As every seasoned angler knows, a successful day on the water requires a lot more than just a rod and reel; it’s also about having a well-equipped boat. For newcomers to the fishing and boating world, having the right boating accessories can make a significant difference between a good day and a great day on the water. That’s why I’ve put together a list of the top 10 boating accessories that every angler and boater should consider adding to their arsenal to be more prepared, and therefore more successful on the water.

1. Dock Buddies
Dock Buddies are a twist on the traditional dock rope. If you are anything like me then you know what a mess tying up to a dock can be, and if you aren’t good at tying dock knots then it isn’t efficient either. That’s why I’ve switched to using something much more efficient, called a dock buddy.
Dock Buddies are an innovative docking tool that help secure your boat easily and quickly. They are designed to streamline the docking process, ensuring your boat doesn’t drift away and is safe from potential damage. A game-changer for many boaters, they’re especially useful for solo adventures. They make tying up quick and simple, and they are also very easy to store.

2. Boat Fenders
That first scratch in a new boat REALLY hurts. That’s why ensuring your boat’s protection when docked or anchored next to other boats is essential. The best way you can do this is by using dock fenders, or what I usually refer to as bumpers.
They act as a cushion, absorbing the shock and preventing potential scratches and damage from collisions whether it’s from another boat or a dock. They come in various shapes and sizes to suit different boating needs.
I have two I keep in my boat at all times and every major stop I make, I use them.
You can find my Fender recommendation right here.
3. Life Vests (& Throwable PFD)
Of course, life vests keep you safe, but they are also required by law in most areas. Make sure you have an adequate number of vests for all passengers, and make sure you have a throwable too. Struggling to find one that works for kids? Go2Marine has you covered. I bought my infant life jacket right here.
Remember, they’re not just for emergencies – they’re for everyday safety.

4. Portable Jump Starter
Being prepared can save you money, time, and stress, that’s why having a portable jump pack needs to be on your list.
I’ve been in more than one situation where I’ve pulled up to the launch only to find out my cranking battery is dead.Thankfully I learned awhile back to keep a portable jump starter in my boat at all times. Dead batteries can be a nightmare when you’re out on the water. A portable jump starter can be a lifesaver in such scenarios, allowing you to jump-start your boat’s engine without needing another vessel. Compact and easy to store, this is an essential tool to have on board. Just don’t forget to recharge it every once in a while or after use.

5. Fire Extinguisher
Not only is a fire extinguisher a safety must-have, it’s also required in many areas, including in my home state of Minnesota.
A potential fire on a boat (or trailer) is a serious hazard. That’s why you must ensure that you have a marine-rated fire extinguisher onboard, and make sure you know how to use it. Regularly check its expiration date and ensure it’s accessible in case of emergencies.

6. Anchor
Many people rely on the electronic anchor system on their boat, such as a trolling motor. However, as with all technology, you always take the risk of running out of battery or having a breakdown and being stranded out on the water. An absolute necessity, a traditional anchor keeps your boat stationary in any situation. The key is to make sure your anchor is appropriate for your boat size and the bodies of water you’ll be anchoring in.
Find the perfect anchor for you.
7. Rope
Rope is essential to every boater’s needs. Always keep a rope with you. Whether you need to launch, load, be towed, or need extra line to secure your boat, having extra rope can be key to being prepared and therefore more successful on the water.
Shop a variety of dock ropes for your application.
8. Backup Plug
Most new boaters won’t forget their plug, as no plug means water entering the boat. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t lose or break one. I’ve broken my fair share of plugs, and then a fun fishing trip turns into a shopping event, losing time and opportunity when you should be on the water.
That’s why it’s always a good idea to keep spare plugs onboard. A standard 1” plug works on most boats.
I recommend shopping spare boat plugs here.
9. First Aid Kit
Anyone who has ever had a hook stuck in their hand will tell you how crucial a first aid kit is to have. When boating or fishing in remote areas, accidents happen, and sometimes the best you can do is take care of yourself. A waterproof first aid kit stocked with bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, and other emergency essentials can be a lifesaver.

10. Landing Net
Catching a fish is one thing, and landing it is another. A net is an often overlooked accessory that can make or break a fishing experience. That’s why I recommend every new angler to have one in their boat and ready to go at all times.
Be sure to choose a net that fits the species you are targeting. You can find a full variety of types of nets and sizes at go2marine.
